About me
My name is Merel, which translates to blackbird — a symbol of freedom, song, and quiet beauty. I’m a photographer and content writer (although I prefer the term storyteller), drawn to capturing authentic moments of connection, warmth, and emotion. My journey began on the dance floor, where I first experienced the power of human connection. It unfolded when I moved to Portugal and lived in a creative community that embraced simplicity, shared moments, and self-expression. Here, I started documenting everyday life and events. Traveling through India and Mexico later deepened my passion for capturing and sharing stories.
Today, I combine photography and words to explore the beauty of real life — spontaneous encounters, warm colors, soft light, and honest emotions. Through my work, I hope to offer a space where people can slow down, feel connected, and remember what truly matters.

Tiny truths about me
- I feel deeply connected to India. I’ve read every single novel about India, brought a street dog from Varanasi with me to the Netherlands, and have a soft spot for Hindi songs. My Indian friends often joke that I’m more Indian than they are.
- In Mexico, I discovered my love for Latin culture. I went to my first party with live salsa music, and in the summer of 2024, I started taking salsa lessons. What started as a fun idea quickly grew into a big part of my life — these days, I spend at least ten hours a week dancing salsa and bachata. I’m also learning Spanish, encouraged daily (and slightly intimidated) by Duo.
- Beyond photography, writing, and dancing, I’m always curious to learn something new. I read a book every week, play the guitar, practice kickboxing, work out regularly, and find moments of stillness through yoga. Also, I’m not ashamed to say I spend way too much time brainstorming ideas with ChatGPT.
